Introduction to Sashiko

Sashiko (literally “little stabs”) is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching or functional embroidery from Japan. Traditional sashiko was used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places or tears with patches. Kits, including fabric swatches, sashiko needles, specialized thimbles and thread will be provided and can be taken home after the class.

Sewing by Hand for Beginners

This class will cover how to thread a needle, anchor a thread, do a running stitch, basting stitch, back stitch, blind stitch, and how to end a stitch. Then, if we have time, how to do a fell stitch, parachute stitch, blanket stitch, how to cut a buttonhole, and how to sew on a button.

This class is beginner-friendly and all supplies will be provided!

Introduction to Sewing by Machine

In this beginner friendly class students will learn how to thread a sewing machine, wind and load a bobbin, replace a needle, and sew a straight and back stitch. Students will complete a small sewing project they can take home with them at the end of class.

No previous sewing experience needed! This class is VERY beginner friendly and suitable for adults and children 12 and up (with an accompanying paying adult). All materials provided.

Introduction to Mending

Students will learn the basic tools and skills needed to repair their own clothes, such as how to assemble a mending kit, how to fix a tear, sew on a patch, and stitch a button. We will also discuss the merits of more advanced mending techniques such as darning and sashiko, but our practical skills will focus on the basics. This class is very beginner friendly and suitable for teens and adults. All materials provided.
